Insect-sized flying robots are hard to create. ME professor is looking to nature to solve some of these challenges. This and more nanoscale mechanical engineering research here: |

Excellent article by Evan Ackerman of the IEEE Spectrum on my recent paper in RA-L about a four-winged fly. A flavor Mother Nature never intended—but should have!

Don’t be sad it’s over, be proud it taught us so much. Congrats to all the men and women of on a mission that beat all expectations, inspired a new generation of Americans, and demands we keep investing in science that pushes the boundaries of human knowledge.

The closure of an old highway (the Alaskan Way Viaduct) brought out Seattle-ites in vast numbers! People on it as far as you can see. After almost 70 years of the sound of cars, the waterfront gets some tranquility again.

The U. Washington Robofly can now walk *and* fly! Pleased to report our recent paper in IROS 2018 about its design. It propels itself across the ground with its wings. It is also easier to fabricate because it is folded from many fewer parts

I feel like I’m doing ok economically but it’s striking how many trends point downward for the young. Stagnant income, dropping investment in higher ed, skyrocketing national debt. The consequence of a lack of political will. Counteract it by voting.

Delivery by drone in Reykjavik! These guys are punting the problem of obstacle avoidance by just using gps and routing around a map of known tall objects. I like it! Nice and simple.

The Seville Bike Story is nothing short of amazing! After installing 80kms of bike lanes in just 18 months, the city has gone from 0 to nearly 10% bike mode share, 35% of cyclists are women & allmost no one wears a helmet. Watch full here:
