Hey! So, I just sort of accepted this as fact and it turns out - it's a myth! The mythological symbolism of the shapes IN the sweater are also not true- it was some researcher who assumed and people like it so they went with ithttps://twitter.com/thorazos/status/1202259647283040262?s=19 …

There's a whole book about them. 'Irish Aran - History, Tradition, Fashion' by Vawn Corrigan published by The O'Brien Press.

Woah. That’s.... morbidly beautiful. Beautifully morbid?

It had plenty of practical uses, too! The wool they used was naturally protected by lanolin, which meant it was water resistant and still cozy-warm when it got wet. There's a lot of fun mythology about these sweaters, which is wild because iirc they really took off in the 1800s

Also fascinating because that boy has never worked a day in his gd life

Well, these days they're worn by people of Means, even though they usually lack the lanolin that made them so desirable in the first place - people tend to think the oil "stinks". The last time I price pointed a mid-range Aran, from a brand, they're around $90-$180.
