But this whole thing shows that creators should avoid YouTube. Was planing to get my stuff up there as I‘m disappointed by Vimeo. But when even big channels like BF with „priority“ support have so much hazzle to get support or at least information on the case ...
The problem is that we only hear about Youtube when things go wrong. So there's a bias there. Whereas myself and even massive youtubers like @JonTronShow have never had any issues with it. Personally, I love the platform. It's not without flaws, but it's helped me beyond belief.
Never had any issues with it because your channels always contained ads, so it's the perfect business for YouTube. Blender has a channel with videos with millions of views and zero advertisement on them. That's why we are being forced to enable ads.
Still, YouTube reaches billions of people, so I guess the solution is to just enable ads on YouTube, use the profits for Blender development, and at the same time provide an ad-free experience on our own servers with PeerTube.
Yeah I think that’s a good decision. Let YouTube cover their bandwidth costs and make a little cash for the institute, while barely affecting viewers.
Better for Blender to migrate over to alternative sources, that is the only way other platforms can grow to compete. Still, to YT's ire, adblockers still exist.
"We noticed that your videos are not making us money, so we are going to block them until they do..." That is really greedy of them. Thanks @YouTube!
Especially since by them being ALL blocked, there's no way any would be able to make YouTube money anymore! It's a Catch-22!
When I monetized my channel this year I got a total of 0 complaints, since most viewers think it's Youtube. Plus the extra revenue meant I could hire another employee. It's your choice, but ads can be a good thing. Youtube would effectively be sponsoring #b3d development.
Having said that, I agree that it should be your choice. I suspect it was a combination of a bot messing up, and the support rep reading into the bug and telling you how to fix it. Because Youtube has made it clear many times that monetization is your choice.
And there in lies the rub - YouTube hadn't properly accounted for popular creators *not* wanting revenue.
@blender_org — silly question, and this may have been asked a few times already... have you considered switching to Vimeo? They treated me well over the years. If it’s a money thing, I can rally some funds together for a Pro Membership...
@Vimeo @VimeoStaff , it looks like @blender_org needs a decent place to host vids. How’s the best way for regular folks like us to contribute to a Pro membership for #FOSS #Blender ?
$800 a year on vimeo to have same features lol with no way to GROW an audience though
I hear you. I’ll admit I’m a hypocrite, using Vimeo for all my personal work and on my portfolio, but also uploading most of it to YouTube for the exposure and growth.
I'm all for competition, but Youtube is THE place to go to reach any sort of large audience. Switching to Vimeo would likely reduce views on Blender Foundation videos by 90-98%. The platforms just aren't comparable. Switch to Vimeo, but prepare for the HUGE hit in lost audience.
Have you considered @Vimeo? We're a 100% ad-free platform :)
No offense, but Vimeo's playback is incomparable to Youtube. I've bailed on plenty of Vimeo videos because it kept stopping to buffer. As a creator myself, I realized that if my videos had the same problems my audience would evaporate. So alas, I'm exclusively on Youtube.
Appreciate the feedback and passed it on to the team! We are happy to set @blender_org / @tonroosendaal up with with a free Pro account. Vimeo’s mission has always been to support creators and help them reach their audience everywhere. Always ad free with high quality in mind.
P.S. I’m a huge fan! I’ve watched countless of your tutorials and a happy Poliigon subscriber. Keep up the good work!pic.twitter.com/sGOyt4PonR
