Bryce isn't wrong here, and maybe that's worse?
The C++ committee is so inefficient at this point we can't get even *basic* things like optional thread names into the standard APIs.
This is not a useful way to provide APIs to my users.

Sure, but then we should stop spending *obnoxious* amounts of money on the standard library. My users actually want the standard library to cover this kind of stuff. They shouldn't need 90% of what is in Abseil (or other similar libs). But, as you point out, today they do. =/

If the standard does not cover basics that are available in rival languages (see C#) beginners (for whom it is rather extremely difficult to connect a library to a C++ project) will continue to think of C++ as a hard mess. And yeah I teach C++ at uni...

And standard efforts in covering basic user needs nearly killed Boost usage so now users rightfully expect standard to cover for the rest of them...
