If Trump pardons himself, the Supreme Court very well might rule against him. Here’s why, via Judge ⁦@joshgerstein⁩:https://www.politico.com/news/2021/01/13/can-trump-pardon-himself-458591 …

A president pardoning himself is not really a thing. He'll need Pence, if Trump has the sense to resign, or Biden to do it.

I think that would be a joyful case of irony. The court he thought he owned.

The concepts of self-pardon & pre-emptive pardon are anti-democratic, authoritarian in basis, unjust, logically invalid, & an offensive delusion of those with a record of undermining democracy, the people's welfare & the national interest. It stinks of mafia & fascist attitudes.

An attempt at a self-pardon is nothing more than a declaration of guilt with further dire legal consequences

Part of me wonders if Trump will try to pardon himself if the Senate convicts him - and then Meadows probably will have to explain to him why it doesn't work that way.

I think Trump's ringers on the Court really don't like ruling on his cases (too evident they are in the tank), so they are faced with one case on whether he can pardon himself, or a dozen about him fighting prosecution etc. I think they take the easy way out personally.

Self-pardons are likely not a thing. Alexander Hamilton, a strong Federalist, implied as much, cf. Federalist Paper 74: "The reflection that the fate of a fellow-creature depended on his [a president's] sole fiat, would naturally inspire scrupulousness and caution... ."
