Just appeared on the podcast. Love the disclaimer:"Listen too closely to this episode and it could mean that this is the very last College Essay Guy podcast episode you listen to… and that could be a very cool thing."

I'm writing an article about the similarities and differences between Sudbury schools, Agile Learning Centers, and Liberated Learners centers. It's fascinating! They are so alike in trusting/empowering kids and promoting self-directed learning, yet so distinct.

I'm looking to interview 17- to 23-year-olds who are thinking about taking their first big international trip in the next year— especially if they have some doubts or anxieties about traveling abroad on their own. Please introduce me via email: yourstruly@blakeboles.com. Thanks!

My guess is that for most kids who are "successful" in school, they were more successful AT school. They figured out the rules and played by them. I'm not sure, however, that success as in a high GPA or great test scores means they actually were "successful" at learning.

The important distinction is not between direct instruction & constructivist or problem-based or learning. It's between consensual & non-consensual learning. Any pedagogy can be employed consensually or non-consensually. It's in this act of power that the problem lies.

Once again: Learning is a natural part of life. Schools are not. They are constructs that by and large are not built on a belief system about learning. That is an unpleasant truth that upsets many in education. But that is where real change begins. What do you mean by "learning"?

I keep wondering why it is we have to work so hard to "engage" students. Maybe we should ask them what the already find engaging in life and see what we can learn.
