What's driving growing income inequality? In this new paper, I argue that the culprit is hierarchy. If we assume that over the last 40 years, corporate hierarchies have become more despotic, the pieces fit together.

After a brief holy-shit moment where I though I bricked my machine, I've managed to install Lineage OS 18 on my old Samsung tablet and give it a new life. A fun way to spend the afternoon :)

So it appears that York didn't set up spam filters for the talk, and we got spammed by a bunch of bots and/or people who dislike my research. So the talk has been postponed.

Hey friends, If you've got the afternoon free, I'm giving a public seminar on hierarchy and income starting at 12:30 Eastern. Hope to see you there. The zoom link is in this pdf:

I'm substitute teaching in a Toronto high school today. It seems that in its great wisdom, the school board has blocked access to sci-hub. Guess I won't be reading papers today ...

It is stunning that the use of 'absentee owner' drops off in the early 1980s, right as the institution rose to new heights.

A Google n-gram showing the occurrence of 'absentee ownership'. It rose steadily through the early 1900s, plateaued and levelled off from the 1940s through the 1970s. Usage dropped off quicly in the early 1980s and has trended downward since.

An interesting thread on inflation and income redistribution. Reminds me of this chart from showing that when inflation rises, so does the relative markup of big business.

Ever wondered why U.S. growth has trended downward for more than a century? Part of the answer is that dominant capital has gradually shifted from greenfield investment to buying existing assets.

Why, for instance, is the topic 'locked' on the Google support page, without an actual solution?

On my old Android tablet, I recently tried to install new software via the Google Play store, and the 'install' button was unresponsive. Is this a bug? Or is it more insidious? Is Google breaking things to make me buy a new device ...

E.O. Wilson's book 'Consilience' is an ode to science and the search for unity amongst difference. Yes, Wilson overstate his case. But the book is still worth reading.
