We have communities of people who aren't programmers first but who care about these issues and understand the trade-offs. They need to be involved.

Many of the people who worked on the doc are amazing organizers and social thinkers in their own right, but their participation is/was predicated on being technologists.

The thing that's missing from this document, though, is sociologists. Moderators. Community organizers. The technology matters, but a big part of the reason I stopped working on these things was because those voices were missing. I worry they're still missing.

I'm so grateful to everyone who did continue, because it's incredible to see all the things that have and are emerging in this world. I have a ton of hope that we'll break good.

I gave up working actively on this stuff in ~2012, because it was clear that we had too far to come and for a bunch of reasons I didn't have the personal capacity to continue pushing.

Reading this document is a total trip. So many conversations and, frankly, traumas, that led to many of the standards and protocols described in it.

With the deplatforming of forums where trumpists and right-wing figures congregate, there's a lot of chatter about whether and when private entities have the right to remove speech, and what obligations come with scale. 1/

As someone who founded an org to build decentralized tech with, for & by marginalized communities I always find variations of this take naive & facile. It ignores both the ethos of decentralized tech as well as the practicalities and realities of how tech serves different groups.

Thoughts on moderation and decentralizing Twitter: Consolidating and fragmenting forces are forcing this platform out of the status quo. Decentralization is voluntary fragmentation, which, if done correctly, can anticipate these changes and establish new norms.

I have all the sympathy in the world for the signal team right now. At the same time, it's *deeply* problematic that we're all rushing to yet-another centralized infrastructure, even if it's run by people we like and trust, in order to mediate really basic text communications.

This looks really interesting, but I don't use an iOS device, which apparently clubhouse requires? Good work excluding 80% of people with mobile devices, clubhouse. Well done. 🤦‍♀️ 👏 👏 👏

Make it opt-out if you're worried about "freedom of speech" but don't or refuse to understand what that means.

Everytime someone talks about good design in government services I want to scream from the top of my lungs WHAT ABOUT IMMIGRATION SERVICES. Applying for citizenship 2 years ago was one of the most gruelling processes I’ve ever gone through where traps were laid everywhere.
