I can't speak for everyone else, but the classic Sonic games have everything I am looking for in a game: - Fast - Fluid - Good physics - Tight controls - Fun music - Good difficult curve (except Sonic 1) - Branching paths - No downloading missiles

The fast-slow-fast-slow level structure leads to a really up and down difficulty curve. Labyrinth Zone is the second zone in the game, yet it's also one of the toughest. Later games fixed this by having fast and slow together in the same zone, with more granular pacing overall.
