It could’ve, but I think the location variety is good to have from the start. We get bored of the same stages quickly but trying new characters is a different experience, so I think that’s what they were going for.
I like the idea of unlocking characters in Smash because having all those characters to choose from the start can be overwhelming. But it begs the question, why not do the same with the stages? Why have all 100+ unlocked from the get go? Unlocking stages could've been fun too.

It is, but why not start from 50 and unlock the other 50? It doesn't have to be just 8 like with the characters.

Personally always thought unlocking stages was a chore, especially in Melee, hated having to go through all the trouble to get Final Destination as a kid, still do Characters are exciting to unlock but stages are kinda eh, would rather just be able to select and go with them
