For someone who has only ever played Dragon Warrior on the NES, what is a good Dragon Quest game to start with?

Depends on what you want, 3 is probably the best classic one. 8 is the best modern one to start with, 11 is very slow at the beginning
And he means very slow. I'm about 6 hours in and I barely have any abilities. I kind of hope that more characters join soon and the dynamic spices up because I want to love it.

I hear it picks up later but I’m not over that hurdle either LOL Gil - I remember you hated SM’s beginning so playing 11 first might actually kill you

Well, if I am being honest I had a similar issue with Persona 5. Why can't JRPGs have a swifter beginning? It's why I love Skies of Arcadia...
