While you’re not wrong, Aces is a step in the right direction to get back on track. Ultra Smash had no excuse, didn’t even give an update to let you use the rest of the Mario amiibo. Power Tennis is great, but they set a high ambition for Aces and it just somewhat gets there.

Depends on what you’re going for. The gameplay is solid and the online function is something the old ones didn’t even have to deal with. Some things are improved while other things get sacrificed. It’s common with a lot of game franchises, for better or worse.

Thing is that that's not how game studios really work. The people that make the game mechanics don't get transferred over to working on the netcode; they get other people that actually know how to do that, to do that.

I am well aware and I believe you may have misunderstood what I was getting at. My point is as games evolve, they often get new features that change the overall focus, and sometimes that means removing previous game features, characters, and in this case, presentation.

There isn’t a law, but there is definitely a budget that makes improving “everything” more difficult. It’s especially common for sports games.

Aces just felt anemic with features, as a game it's really fun. Just wish there was more to do.
