Jesus. Think this stems from the “everyone is a winner” culture? No reason to try and do your best when everyone gets a trophy and then you can’t function in the real world.
-
Wait, what are you trying to say?
-
That when you’re told that you’re a winner and everything and are treated like you can do no wrong, you don’t learn to deal with disappointment. (Of course this is not true of everyone, and there’s probably underlying mental issues here, but this could be where it starts?)
-
I doubt it’s a symptom of the “everyone’s a winner” culture people tend to blame things on, I mean there isn’t a big online cult of women incels talking about raping and attacking men with acid
-
Very true. Though I did wonder if it stemmed from it and I believe there’s some major mental illness going on that pushed it into terrorism.
-
Similar but more accurately, I think it stems from entitlement. Mostly I think they’re just assholes. MEN don’t behave like that. Spoiled little boys who think they automatically deserve anything they want and whine when they don’t get it, do.

Fantastic article, Brooke. The incel community needs to be outed for the garbage heap that it is. It shows a greater problem of people creating groups that massage the worst in us.
-
The only piece of the puzzle I wish was mentioned is that, for some of them, this is just being outrageous for the sake of it. A large minority of them are just meming and being shitty because it’s fun. We have to be careful in taking them seriously only where it matters

Meanwhile the NYT publishes Douthat musing on whether incels maybe have a point. These are the times we’re living in

Good piece. Never any excuse 4 violence, but there is a lot of media-driven blame & humiliation, often directed at men.
-
Bitterness between the sexes is exacerbated lately by media & that it could be triggering disturbed individuals
-
By media I mean internet, social media & mainstream media
-
There is a ton of dehumanizing content about women out there, & a lot of dwelling on the sins of certain men
-
I wonder if the cumulative effect is quite negative, especially on the minds of people who are not well adjusted 2 start
-
So what I want to know is incel violence vs general society? Is there a larger incident? Because my first pass, is this isn’t a particularly violent group, it’s young guys talking about sexy video game girls while vioicing their frustrations to each other about not doing it.
-
Prior to online venting , sharing fantasy, was telling ur friends & looking at magazines. I think this is overdone, gamers see female video game icons as sex objects bc they are developed as sex objects, discussing frustrations or fantasy isn’t a cultural prob, it’s coming of age
-
It’s like allowing a reporter into that stage of life. Have you taken the time to discern the young guys, vs old guys, the ppl that used that as a voice for their fantasy & felt welcome vs the ppl that were there to abuse? Is there any data?
