One of the coolest cocktails I've made in a long time. Gorgeous and shockingly good. Lagurian Sea: a Cynar Negroni with an absinthe louche float

New: SIM swappers are escalating. Hackers now reaching directly into AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint systems to perform SIM swaps themselves. Seen screenshots of this in action with T-Mobile and AT&T; Sprint confirmed issue. SIM swapper source confirmed reporting

"SIM swap" attacks have been in the news for years. They’ve enabled serious financial crimes and even a hack of the Twitter CEO's account. We spent 6 months researching how vulnerable wireless accounts are to these attacks. Our draft study is out today.

Overall, I think the clarity of our results (especially given the challenges of our document corpus) speaks to value of the method🙂

For example, what we first thought was "imprecise language and hype" became its own category of concepts: normative properties. Knowing industry's beliefs and hopes for blockchain tech helps explain the interest in different use cases.

This was my first time using social science methods or tackling a qualitative problem in CS research, and it was eye-opening. Grounded theory helped us develop a clear, concise taxonomy of concepts that we could reason about in a structured way!

The next step was to generate theories about patterns and structures in the data, then test, critique, and compare them until consistency emerged. We did this primarily with sticky notes on whiteboards, and you can see our final diagrams in the article.

The first step was open coding: reading 132 papers and labeling concepts without judgment. Then we iteratively condensed the codes into 68 concepts, referring back to the documents to ensure we were still capturing the original ideas.

We needed a rigorous method for extracting concepts from a messy corpus of documents, then organizing those concepts. proposed grounded theory, a structured process of comparison and refinement for developing theories about data.

Our goal was to understand the use cases of blockchain: what applications have been considered or developed, and how strong is the basis for using blockchain for each? Industry papers had the answers, but information was often obscured by imprecise language and hyperbole.

This article covers our results in detail, but the methodology and analysis sections are brief, so I want to say a little more about what we did. A quick thread:

In parallel with academic blockchain work, commercial, non-profit, and govt orgs have produced a body of lit focused on understanding & applying the tech. Our new article discusses what they get right/wrong & which of their applications actually make sense.

In my paper for the AI for Social Good Workshop , I argue that "good" isn't good enough. CS attempts to do good lack both a definition of good and a theory of change for how to achieve it. These attempts to do good can cause significant harm.

we often under-teach the process (vs the techniques) of doing research. here is how I currently advise my PhD students. work in progress.

The danger of pervasive disinfo is not being misled about a single topic, but losing our ability to discern truth. When we lose confidence in what we know, we become unable to make decisions that democratic societies need to make to govern themselves.

It's appalling and exploitative to pay under $2/hr for any labor, and it's especially wrong coming from researchers. MIT IRB suggests $.04 for a minute-long task, or $2.40/hr minus time spent finding and accepting tasks. These practices need to change.

There used to be a set of crowdsourced principles for ethical research on MTurk hosted at , but I'm sad to see it's no longer there. Good starting point: provide clear task descriptions, accurate time estimates, and fair pay for labor.
