Frankly they never mentioned a PS3 BC in the past and now either... so while you can still hope for it, the chances are rather slim since it's still totally up in the air :|

Just searched for news in Japanese, and I haven't found any follow-ups in Japanese more recent than this. The latest I could find was just translated from an originally English article mentioning BC with PS4 & PSVR

PS2 didn't have 100% PSX backwards compatibility. The base version of the PS3, which had the emotion engine hardwired in, didn't have 100% PS2 backwards compatibility either.
I can see why they'd be looking into making sure that's not an issue on the PS5.

That's literally all people could hope for with Sony. They sadly don't care about PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP or PS Vita games any more.
