This is fascinating - only in the last 5 years that venture capital has gone global. Is the genie now out the bottle?

Also in hindsight, Argos (as with warehouse retail in the US) was just a staging post on the journey to online retail.

Lots of fascinating reflections in this slideset. - Like Slovakia and the UK are more like China than the US for online retail. - And I've been watching Amazon perform this exponential growth in real-time (nothing, nothing, nothing * 10, a little, more, more, boom!)

I keep coming across anecdotal tales of people being able to imagine things that appear in their visual field (e.g. the mind’s eye superimposed like AR). Is this real or some massive trolling? (I have no such appearances, even with “apple” & my eyes closed.)

I’m working on a model of intelligence where it turns out that embracing randomness, rather than trying to avoid it, is key. I have a feeling that to get near to true intelligent behaviour we have to give up predictability.

Airbus fine from SFO is good news for everybody, including Airbus, and will hopefully set a precedent for cleaner global mega-business. (Is Justice contingent though? - Would we have same happiness without the self-inflicted implosion of rival Boeing?)

I very much like Carlo’s outlook on life.

Cool - the application of causal set theory to universe models mean you don’t have to conjure up the additional entity of “dark energy” to explain an expanding universe.

Fay Dowker on a new theory of space-time [I like the idea of discrete spacetime and causal set theory - always a bigger fan of discrete mathematics than continuous.]

Spacetime is doomed in physics (say some smart physicists). It needs to be ditched then reconstituted as an emergent phenomenon of something deeper & weirder.

In simulations, agents tuned to just perceive fitness payoffs outcompeted those that perceived a true version of the virtual world.

One unfortunate byproduct of globalisation is that many people do not work with others locally, especially outside of global capitals. People who live nearby thus mix less through business on a daily basis.

Turns out most big data platforms (MySQL, Spark etc) use textbook algorithms for computing mean/variance of big datasets, which are actually slow and prone to number error -

I love - there are so many hidden gem pages. This is a recent favourite - - much more useful than many academic papers I have read. Also shows that algorithms are to maths what engineering is to science.

The exponential population explosion seen in the last 200-odd years in the UK is primarily down to a large reduction in infant mortality. 200 years ago the odds were against you for reaching 16.

Also if you read any business news or quarterly earnings report it’s like watching shaman interpret bone ash patterns in the wind.

It’s cool - as we have more information than ever it becomes much more apparent that our “facts” are really just narrative abstractions over a messier, more chaotic reality. The answer to “why?” is a often guide rather than an objective reality.

Funny how a vibrant tea and/or coffee culture is reflective of a wider fetishising/celebration of the intellect. It’s as true now as it was in Baghdad in C10, China before that or London in C17.
