So I was thinking about the famous moral dilemma around driverless cars and I'm sure people have thought of this before -- especially those who get paid to think about it -- but it's wild that addressing the micro trolley problem creates a macro prisoner's dilemma.

Because nobody is going to be interested in buying a car that will make the "my driver must die" calculation unless there is a multilateral agreement among auto manufacturers that they all think the same.

Now at this point assuming a world of properly functioning driverless cars, auto fatalities will be low enough that dying in them isn't really an issue BUT... you know there are people out there who will want the house edge and break from the contract.

Do they do so by hiring an unethical mechanic to fuck with the car and install software that changes the moral calculations their car makes? Or can the rich maintain class solidarity enough that, say, Bentleys quietly renege on the deal?

i straight up never considered any of this and it's like perfectly inevitable that there is going to be some situation with these things where you have two AI-controlled cars who are in direct competition with each other to see who can kill the human within it's opponent
