Originally, our constraint was 160 (limit of a text) minus username. But we noticed @biz got 1 more than @jack. For fairness, we chose 140. Now texts are unlimited. Also, we realize that 140 isn't fair—there are differences between languages. We're testing the limits. Hello 280!

280 Characters is roughly 50 words. You can read 50 words. I believe in you Caitlin. We all believe in you.

We can read 50 words, but who said we want to? Character limit is what makes Twitter different, changing it will be the loss of its identity

There still is a character limit! Science and study showed us phonetic languages want and need ~280. Not everyone will use this amount.

The short tweets are better, they're more dynamic If you wanna write huge texts go talk to someone on their dm or write in another site

I truly hope the company is spending as much time on combatting racism, harassment, and bots as it is on this. It doesn’t seem like it.

I appreciate this, but you (and especially @jack) need to do better at engaging the community on those efforts. We don't see any results.

That's your opinion. Our research team studied this from many angles. It's not just pulled out of thin air.

It likely would not have even gotten to a testing phase if they had just talked to users first.

Not according to the research. Phonetic languages hit the limit too often while character based languages rarely go beyond half the limit.
