Originally, our constraint was 160 (limit of a text) minus username. But we noticed got 1 more than . For fairness, we chose 140. Now texts are unlimited. Also, we realize that 140 isn't fair—there are differences between languages. We're testing the limits. Hello 280!

He’s not a serious person. He does things for sport that have serious consequences for real people. This is an open, global service. US politics is not much of Twitter. (K-pop might be bigger.) Also, in other places lives are at stake.

Last year, we upgraded tweet length to 280 and guess what? Use of 'please' is up 54% and 'thank you' is up 22%. I love that! Also, people are asking more questions and having more conversations. All this, and the majority of tweets are still under 140. It worked.

The open floorplan for software companies is a bad idea. We need private offices to get work done. There, I said it.

We were always “people first” at Twitter. The folks around us were funny, smart, creative, and kind. Thank you to all the Tweeps!

Originally, tweet length was 160 minus username length. One day, I turned to Jack and pointed out that I got one more character than him. He said, "That's not fair. We should standardize." I agreed. He said, "How about 140?" I said, "Sure." And he updated the code.

Political ads are not about freedom of expression—they are about paying for reach rather than earning reach. We’re stoping political ads on Twitter. Everyone in a position to serve politcal ads should stop and have a think.

If you want to be successful in the long run, be generous. Mentor, volunteer, teach, help, share ideas and credit. Selflessness is, ultimately, self serving.

It’s heartbreaking. All the world events we didn’t make public to protect brave people. Also, on the Trump poll, “The people have spoken!” How many Russians voted? It’s global. That’s not what we made it for…Chief. Oy.

Notice our new prototype? and I named and designed it based on old times. It’s called, “twttr." The bird flew away from the app icon representing: Simplicity. Blue sky thinking. We’re re-working. Not there yet; hence, no logo. Bold and a little weird. #LetsHaveAConvo

Our tortoise of 15 years escaped 5 months ago. We searched. No hope. Yesterday, Jake discovered him munching clover at his school. Incredible! Roshi is back after a grand adventure.

Facebook is stuff that happened, Twitter is stuff that's happening, and Pinterest is stuff that will happen. It's all good.

Hold something you want to happen loosely in your head for days, weeks, months, or even longer, and you will unconsciously do things that advance you toward that goal. #FridayFeeling

I drew a bird for the Twitter logo. Lawyers needed a name to trademark it. I’m from Boston so I named it Larry Bird. I wonder if he knows?

To sum up. We're funding the creation of an open source Social Media Protocol. We won't own it. We'll build on it and so will others. It's going to be exciting to see what developers around the world create. This was an early idea at Twitter and it's time has come.

We gave iPhones to everyone at Twitter when they first came out. We were still based in 164 South Park.

Last week I officially crossed one complete year since returning full time to Twitter. It’s been an amazingly productive year for Twitter. It’s been a lot of hard work by all—but it feels to me like it’s only been a month! #LoveWhereYouWork

After 12 years, the incomparable has left the Twitter board. He got me a job at Google in 2003 and changed my life forever. He's a mentor, an inspiration, and a friend.

When I worked at Google in 2003, search results were sacrosanct. Now, they just barely make it above the fold because of all the ads. (And yes, I’m researching solar roofs!)

FYI: We will not be removing any inactive accounts until we create a new way for people to memorialize accounts [of those we loved who are now gone but their thoughts are still cherished].
