Last time I interviewed with a firm that did such a test, they used their own software for it and: They hadn't cleaned up the last candidate's answers. The account didn't have permission to save results. The application fell over after 10 mins. Team-chat blocked by firewall.

I guess that was a revealing interview, but not in the way they probably expected.

I've tried this to screen potential new team members, with participation of current team members. Results were pretty disappointing. It seems a vanishingly small number of software developers know how to ask for help, or believe it's appropriate to do so in an interview/audition.
-
I believe that. But I don't think it means we shouldn't interview developers that way. I think it means we *should*.

That reminds me of the old hiring question "why are manhole covers round?" Evaluate their ability to think, not just recite back what they memorized. Later research found that performance on such questions was a poor predictor of job performance. Scoring was way too subjective.
-
What about the ability to recite back what they'd memorized? Did that correlate well with subsequent job performance?

Have done similar but was very careful to let the candidate know that asking for help was expected as they couldn't know all the context of the system. All the candidates that did best ended up getting hired at other companies that were more prestigious or paid better so

We ask how to remove a file that they accidentally created and named "-". Very revealing :-)

These are the interviews I enjoy the best and the most rewarding in my career (http://desilva.io ). The team I’m with right now basically allowed me to showcase what I had built in the past, which was so much more sensible than the nonsensical hacker-rank madness out there
