Over the last five years I've collected eclipses with this single composition in mind. I call it "Cyclipse". It's made of a total solar eclipse, partial solar eclipse, total lunar eclipse, and waxing crescent Moon. It feels so good to see it come together over the years.

Surprisingly (or not), the best predictor of the number of bugs in a piece of software is the complexity of the organization that develops it

Awkward interactions, calculated risks, time alone, and connecting with others face to face are all important parts of being human. The illusions of safety and control provided by our technology also produce isolation, distraction, and anxiety

Life is a grey area. “The first step towards thinking in 3D is realizing that you carry many of your cherished positions too strongly. Most of practical reality lies outside the realm of mathematical certainty.”

Being rewarded for working long hours only makes sense if you're doing something well. In fact, if you're bad at your job, the less you do it, the better! You should be rewarded for showing up late and going home early.

Do you really imagine that the future of monitoring is going to be us staring at dashboards and constantly configuring the monitoring tool to tell it what to look for? I don’t, and I believe there is a better way

“I am a lot more than a huge amount of money. I am a bunch of stuff, which means that if I don’t exist any more, there’s no one else to make sure we’ve got this computer to do everything from governance to research.” Food for thought

While incidents do not repeat, they do rhyme. Team members who have been around longer tend to recognise the characteristics of an impending outage. Recognizing humans as part of the system is an important piece of how a team conducts incident reviews

I see a lot of software developers learning ~all the technologies~ (languages, frameworks, etc.) when the most important thing is learning how to code, debug, write algorithms, document... fundamental programming skills that are translatable to any language, not just syntax.

What's wrong with exceptions? They create a second system logic of control flow, disconnected from the usual one, unpredictable, hybridized and intertwined. We should stop using them (or use a language that doesn't have them, like Go)
