It's been 2 months since I put on hiatus. I should probably get in touch with the teams about rebooting the project and organising , soon.

This is the first week in 5 years that I've not had to organise, promote or generally do anything -related (Christmas breaks aside). I feel bad for letting the & biology Twitter communities down a little and Biotweeps will be back but, honestly, it's kinda nice.

Last day of . It's important to remember that Asian elephants live in a part of the world with the densest human population. Current Asian elephant range has been reduced by 85%.

I wish I could've done even more...it was the first week of classes here, and I always underestimate how exhausting that is! But I'll be checking back here throughout the day, so please do ask any lingering questions you have.

You can also support the work of elephant conservation groups. There are a lot of them out there, but my favorites are the International Elephant Foundation ( and ) and Asian Elephant Support ().

So what can we do to help elephants? Most importantly, be conscious of your actions. Don’t buy ivory. Consume less and reuse/recycle more. Learn how the products you use affect elephants and the places that they live.

And of course I meant "with about 1/3 of those in human care"

Why should we care about elephants? Because they’re super important! As keystone species and ecosystem engineers, elephants modify the environment to promote or limit the existence of other species. (Image: )

HEC is a challenging problem: elephants are adaptable animals that quickly outsmart mitigation strategies, and the stakes are high as human livelihoods are at risk. Everything we know and learn about elephants should be applied to HEC.

The direct and indirect effects of human activity threaten elephants. As human populations grow, and elephant habitat shrinks, humans and elephants often interact negatively, forming the basis of human–elephant conflict (HEC).

We all know about the dangers of ivory poaching, but this mostly affects African elephants. However, skin poaching is becoming more common in Asian eles, threatening all demographics. Here's a great report by et al.:

This August is the first , and we've still got a few days left to spread the word. Asian elephants are far less numerous than African eles: there are 30,000 to 50,000 Asian elephants left in the world, without about 1/3 of those in human care.

A zoo is part educational facility, part conservation center, and part laboratory. For elephants alone, we've learned so much that has already been applied to wild populations, including veterinary medicine, nutrition, reproduction, and sensory biology:
