It's important not just to remember this (the incorrect guidance on masks) but to study and understand it. When I wrote my "masks work" op-ed on March 17 for the New York Times, I honestly thought I was likely ending my career as a public writer. https://twitter.com/Aelkus/status/1261994903007113216 …

That was *just* two months ago. I'm grateful that instead, the science won and the messaging moved. But, of course, there is resistance to a message (wear masks) that, just two months ago, was treated like being an anti-vaxxer by global, US and European health authorities.

Why didn't we listen to the medical experts in Asia? Why was it so hard to communicate that masks are a public good (they protect others and collectively protect all of us) in a pandemic for a respiratory disease? And how did we move so fast to scolding, forgetting what happened?

Thank you! Again, I wrote a pro-mask oped thinking that was the end of my writing career (I have a day job as an academic so a small sacrifice in the grand scheme) and people who followed the advice were sneered at and even attacked. JUST TWO MONTHS AGO.https://twitter.com/artcraftculture/status/1262067746960883713 …

I started sewing and wearing masks the minute I read your essay, because it made so much sense and I’m 62 and would prefer not to die. Thank you. The first time I wore one to the grocery store I got pointed at and laughed at by dumbass macho dudes.

"We" keep starting the analytic clock from the moment when "we" changed our mind or got affected (Trump getting elected, for ex.). That's no way to understand the world. It's human: "we" are all blind to ourselves. It takes enormous effort to try not to be. But that's the work.

Thank you! I also thought I was toast. I'm proud of what I chose to do but I'm also an academic with tenure. That's the whole point of tenure: to give people the opportunity to take these kinds of risks. It wasn't exactly running into a burning building.https://twitter.com/LazarusLong13/status/1262069538255826944 …

We need to get better at allowing ourselves, and others, to be wrong, to screw up, and to make mistakes. We’ve made it almost impossible for someone to change their mind, or even to simply say “oops, sorry”. And admitting to not knowing something has become an unforgivable sin.

Yes, the messaging ranged from "they don't work" to "they make things worse." The latter never had any scientific basis but gets repeated to this day.https://twitter.com/Fly_Agaric/status/1262072335315562496 …

Honest question… I never remember “masks don’t work” being the common wisdom / mantra. Use was discouraged because of fear that medical quality ones were needed for medical workers and efficacy of simple clothe masks had not been determined. Am I remembering wrong?

As usual, all of that gets mixed together. To this day, anti-maskers cite the old articles (especially the ones that falsely said masks make things worse), screenshots of CDC guidelines/tweets, WHO... It's embedded in a individualistic/liberty framework.https://twitter.com/TeflonFong/status/1262075578812948481 …

I wonder how much a factor the bungled messaging and quick stance-changing played a part in the current anti-mask movement or is it mostly inherently a cultural thing - freedom/civil liberties/etc and a repeat of the anti-mask league in 1918?

I think the problem was one of collective vs individual perspective. In the west most of us see a health intervention from a “protect yourself” perspective, and masks are quite ineffective at protecting the wearer. But from a collectivist protective, if we can all agree...(1/2)

(2/2) to wear masks to protect each other, then they work. In the west, products are evaluated for their ability to protect the user, not their society-wide ~75% reduction in transmission

I’m still mad at @Laurie_Garrett for her late Jan @ForeignPolicy piece. Didn’t get it right until @ScottGottliebMD said to mask in what, early March.

This is why it is so difficult to get people to wear a mask. It isn't to protect THEM, it is to protect other people FROM them and that just does not register with many people.
