Trump and the rioters really were trying to prevent a peaceful transfer of power to our next elected leader. But they didn't formulate anything like a coherent plan for how to do it. And I'm not sure any of them—maybe even Trump—cared that much if it succeeded.

The main threat isn't that a future neo-confederate mob led by a shirtless guy in a viking helmet actually takes control of the government. It's that misinformation and sporadic chaos and violence and continue destroying public trust.

It is absolutely larping. The problem is that historically it starts off as a joke and then some of the larpers end up talking each other into killing people

I don’t love this bright line drawn between seriousness and larping. It seems to imply that ppl either act for attention, or they want to change stuff. But people constantly engage in behavior that they hope will raise their status AND have real-world implications.

I think it's fair to draw a reasonably bright line about yesterday, given that there was no conceivable connection between what the rioters were doing (invading the Capitol) and what they hoped to achieve (keeping Trump in power).

There's video of a woman upset at being maced and pushed out of the capitol. This fits with the idea that she didn't see what she was doing was for real. This isn't like Senior Skip Day, lady.

There were bombs found on the grounds. They brought zip ties to take hostages. This isn't rocket science.pic.twitter.com/LBtIPqueU0

Robert, any idea why this guy decided to just... not do anything? I mean, it's not as if he were arrested or anything.
