The Internet is undermining the public reputation of the news industry in two ways: (1) intense competition among outlets puts pressure on journalists to crank out low-quality content with clickbait headlines. (2) Social media makes it easy to share the most egregious screwups.

So I think the Internet really has made the quality of news worse, but it hasn't gotten worse as much as the public thinks it has.

At the same time, the public understandably doesn't care about the structure of the news business. When they see an example of some reporter doing egregiously sloppy or partisan work, they blame "the media" rather than that particular reporter or publication.

Bigger issue is that the internet makes it easier to seek the news you want, not the news you need. This helps perpetuate a confirmation bias. If you are a liberal you can just view liberal news media. If you are a conservative you can just view conservative news media.

The news industry is undermining their OWN reputation. They have been for quite some time. Reaping what they have sewn.

Is the internet undermining or exposing something that’s always been there at some level?

Or how about the internet, and platforms like Twitter, allow people to get news or at least opinions from actual experts without media interference. It was obvious by mid/late January because many experts were saying it was going to happen. Twitter>mainstream media

I believe the President and other politicians are hurting the reputation of the news as well.
