My heart goes out to the employees of Walgreens stores in San Francisco. Most are making close to minimum wage. Cannot imagine what it feels like to watch people come in and loot $900 worth of goods at a time, day in and day out.

Or have at least $2.83 mil of their wages stolen by corporate:https://news.bloomberglaw.com/daily-labor-report/walgreens-employees-in-california-secure-4-5-million-wage-deal …

I honestly don't get these replies, are you saying they deserve it, and the people who no longer have access to pharmacies, The workers laid off, they're just what, collateral damage? To teach evil Corp a lesson? I guess you could do Target next, CVS.

Um, no. It’s just hard to imagine how insanely gullible one must be to uncritically accept a corporate press release blaming store closures on shoplifting given, eg, pandemic-related market conditions.

Walgreens had $140 billion in revenue last year so to point to a $3 million settlement as problematic for their existence is absurd. And covid is a short term impact compared to these policies. They won’t stay in CA as profits are literally walking out the door there. Lunacy.

The settlement’s of course not problematic for their existence. My point is that the workers are suffering, but not because Walgreen’s has their back and is closing stores to protect them.

But Walgreen’s is closing SF stores specifically b/c of this policy, not Covid. Walgreens can’t keep operating these stores just to protect workers. Others will follow. Totally preventable with different policy in place.https://www.reviewjournal.com/opinion/editorials/editorial-stores-close-early-in-response-to-rampant-san-francisco-shoplifting-2396901/ …

I think you are willingly misunderstanding Mike's point. He's saying it's odd to uncritically accept Walgreens' explanation for the decision to close these stores, without any further reflection about other economic forces or business considerations that might be driving it.

He's not - he's using their statement as just one proof point, which is reinforced by the looting and violence we are experiencing in San Francisco every day, with not action whatsoever by @chesaboudin
