It's true, however incumbents who rarely faced serious primaries in the past don't like suddenly having 30-40% of the vote being taken by candidates who spend next to nothing. The problem on progressives' part is energy/organizational based, and this year they were depressed

A win’s a win. Folks were saying .
@AOC’s victory was a fluke, and she trounced the centrist put up against her in the primary this year. The pendulum swings back and forth and conservatives (R and D) have had a great run since Nixon was elected. Let’s see what the future holds. -
"Fluke" is too dismissive. But the two socialist primary wins over incumbents in the last two cycles involved long-time incumbents in deep blue districts who were accused of living in Washington and not at home. It doesn't speak to a broader hard left ideological shift.

We're currently at more GOP reps losing this cycle than Dem reps, right? But there's no question that AOC zeroed in on Engel to boost the primary against him because of a personal animus.
