he also improved over time, I found.

I always liked him. I really enjoyed him doing a few Cardinal series a year at the end of his career.

McCarver was amazing when he was on local Mets broadcasts, far better than he was on national ones later on.
-
He was fine on national broadcasts that weren't the All-Star Game or the postseason. I think the problems came when he felt he had to entertain a non-fan audience.

On repeated pickoff lobs or throws he used to say 'Speed slows the game down' Good stuff!

Really? I couldn’t stand McCarver and his insipid comments. And he brought down Joe Buck, who has flourished since McCarver’s departure.

He new about 2 things - Baseball and People. He used that talent to entertain and enlighten during a broadcast.

Joe Theismann and Rick Barry were like that. Couldn't stand either one of them, but I'd always learn something when they'd do a game.

Steve Stone. I grew up with Joe Nuxhall, and I learned to love the game from him. But I've been listening to Stoney now for many years, and he's pretty great. I enjoyed McCarver.
