A plot of land seeded and grown as mitigation for Cirl Buntings for building development in has attracted 50+ yellowhammers, at least 11 Cirl Buntings this winter - absolutely fantastic, more Buntings in this area than I've seen in more that 40 years!

Powerful cold wind blowing N.W. across Saltram NT this morning. Lin spotted this oddity, a Red-crested Pochard (f) in the duckpond. 40+ Curlew in Blaxton Meadow took off and moved out of sight on to the banks of the Plym. A Song Thrush singing in a Yew.

today's blog () explores the history & future of Local Wildlife Sites. Often playing 2nd fiddle to SSSIs, Local Sites are incredibly important. Recent data show that many Local Authorities don't have the resources to know whats happening to them 1/x

Counties like Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Wiltshire, Suffolk, Lancashire, Bucks, Beds and Cheshire failed to report on the thousands of Local Wildife Sites in their area. Defra just assumed that they would be in the same status as last year. This is a hugely naive assumption. 3/x

Blue winged Teal at Man Sands this morning. Showed very well feeding for about an hour before heading off for a snooze. Turning into a beautiful dapper duck!

A nice collection of birders at the reeds behind Broadsands beach, in a little sunshine, watched fly-catching Goldcrest, Firecrest, Chiffs (inc 1 Sibe) plus Reed Buntings. The very green Greenfinch was behind the car park.

No Mediterranean Gulls at Preston, Paignton this afternoon. Spent a little while snapping at the local Turnstones. A Great Northern Diver was diving fairly close to the tideline.

Broadsands for 1.5hrs. Dark with bitter East wind. 2 Chiffs, this one v. grey (Sib poss?) and a Goldcrest above the reedbed. Anyone recognise the shrubby tree they were in? Also Cirl Bunting and Yellowhammer behind the car park.

Weathers been bad this last two days but did get shots of a Little Grebe and a Black-headed Gull down at Clennon Lakes on Wednesday. No sign of Kingfishers.
