The information on my site wouldn't change if it were switched to https, so should https really be a ranking signal?

@bill_slawski Agreed. I can understand the need to switch if I am collecting information or taking payments, but for information sites?

@Marie_Haynes This is the kind of ranking signal that makes search results less relevant. :(

@bill_slawski agreed. I think there needs to be a line drawn to transactional sites only?

@simonpenson I'm dreading a surge in https certificate errors that I'm suddenly responsible for in the future instead of a developer. :)

@bill_slawski couldn't the argument be made that by having a more secure site you're bettering the 'passive' user experience?

@Colliered If I did things like collect personally identifiable information such as credit card numbers, sure.

@bill_slawski I would say not. It should only be a ranking signal/demotion if private data is sent insecurely = safeguarding G's searchers

@WilliamHarvey Tailoring it to a compelling reason for a change just makes too much sense. :)

@bill_slawski Depends what effect HTTPS has on users perception of that site/page. You could ask the same question about site speed.
