Looks a lot like giant spear lillies - Doryanthes palmeri, or something related to it? These pics are of big old ones growing wild on the peak of Mt Cordeaux (QLD). They look spectacular when in bloom and hang over the walking paths.

I know someone who may be interested in volunteering at Sawtell. I may also be available then as I've got a very flexible work schedule. Will get back to you if it's possible. Here's the ringtail possum that has a drey above my bedroom. All the best with your research!

My favourite tawny frogmouth is back in the tree next to my bedroom, lulling me to sleep with its soft, deep & continuous "oom, oom, oom." Notice its weak feet that don't have curved talons - different to owls. Love their scruffy, wide-mouthed face.

Thank you. 🙂 I had a wonderful few hours of peace at the creek. Here's a pic of the tranquil spot.

Appreciating the quiet efficiency of an azure kingfisher catching fish and yabbies on land.

A welcome sight in the garden to lift my spirits. A sacred kingfisher couple have moved in and made a nesting hole in an arboreal termite nest.

Thanks Carol. I've been using "Feeding the Birds at Your Table: A Guide for Australia"-Darryl Jones. Birdlife Australia CEO wrote:"At last, a sensible science-based guide to safely feeding wild birds in Australia." I've had lots of species needing transition sustenance.

A fantastic blog! A few of my own favourite wildlife encounters in 2019 include flying foxes, teddy bear bees and a ringtail possum in my own backyard, as well as a tawny frogmouth pair at Lake Maroon.

A new visitor to my suburban backyard - first ibis to visit in the decade I've lived here.

The 4 birdbaths are getting a little crowded these days. Pics from a 43C day this week.

The ringtail possum has left his drey for a drink. 41C here - too hot to wait until night.

Blue-banded bee joy. 😍 I usually see them as solitary individuals, but yesterday came across this group settling down for the night. Last picture shows one that didn't survive the night.

Been hearing frogmouths for the last few weeks and finally spotted one in a tree by my bedroom window. The currawong parents are not impressed though.

Just purchased your wonderful "Bird Therapy" from an Australian bookshop, as have a few of my friends. Thanks very much for sharing your story, Joe. I'm so glad you are still with us. 🙂

The megabats love my native flowering trees and shrubs in the evenings, and during the drought and bushfires some even keep eating during the day (like these ones.)

It works now. A short vid of the feathered refugees from recent bushfires. Their feathers have regrown and facial injuries healed at last. (Apologies for my dodgy voice-over.)
