As my very first post on twitter, I am very excited to announce that our article "Identification of cancer driver genes based on nucleotide context" appeared in Nature Genetics today. Here is the link to our study:

This seems like a reasonably well balanced discussion of whether can be contained, how severe it will be if not, and what happens next. The key is that there is a lot of uncertainty.

Most of the modelers responding to nCoV are doing so pro bono. There is no funding for this work. Every outbreak they drop the work they are funded to do and volunteer their expertise to help us all to understand what is happening and how to respond. 1/

Epidemics are mirrors that reflect the society they affect. I wrote about what the new coronavirus, 2019-nCoV, tells us about the world as it stands in 2020--the pace of modern science, the threat of fake news, the growth of isolationism, and all the rest.

  7. Teaching microbial ecol/evol & considering going full nCoV for a while. I feel like its almost irresponsible to not mention. It is, of course, also irresponsible to focus on disease @ the expense of other important ecol/evol topics. But the learning opps are so rich. Thoughts?

in 1960, 4 Black students in Greensboro, NC sat down at a Woolworth's lunch counter & demanded service. They were denied so they sat quietly at the lunch counter until the store closed. The next day, 25 men & 4 women continued the protest.

Scientific paper: travel restrictions failed to stop the spread of H1N1. Look, I get it. Travel bans seem like an intuitive way to halt spread. But all the evidence from similar epidemics shows that the benefits are minimal and the risks are enormous.

Nigerian immigrants are by far the most educated immigrant group in the US. Over 20% have *graduate* degrees. But... They're also black. So due to the "travel ban" Nigerians will no longer be allowed to get green cards. The ban was never about security.
