Smalltalk-80 is 40 years old. Java is 25 years old. I've been coding in Java w/ Smalltalk patterns for 16 years. Thousands of devs have been using the past 8 years. In OSS, developers drive. We make Java better. Put your seatbelts on.

If the reproduction or the intuition is lost, those facts on themselves are enough to inspire new research. Popularising a concept is super important. Even just understanding (and possibly) simplifying the math can be new research. There are endless opportunities here.

In my eyes, this is an invitation to people that like an idea, e.g., of a POPL paper (POPL papers intimidate me the most sometimes), but are scared by the semantics, math and proofs not to get lost to them before grasping the main idea.

And in the end he calls people to try and reproduce. This is an excellent presentation. This is something that even researchers can do, this is an ode behind Feynman's quote "What I cannot create, I do not understand"

He trusts/respects the authors but he doesn't take for granted what they say. So in order to understand the idea better (maybe even the math as a later step) he reproduces the results. He takes liberties with sizes, amounts, extractions, blends...

Here we see a good understanding (on a high level idea) of a paper. However he does not takes a defensive stance on the reproduction because of the complicated math.

I really like this video by on reproducing/presenting his understanding of the paper on "Systematically Improving Espresso: Insights from Mathematical Modeling and Experiment"

PolyGame: An open-source framework for training AI players through self-play. Deals with many games, board size variation, partial observability... Interesting generalization tidbit: It plays Go on 19x19 at very good level after training only on 13x13.
