Longing for someone to explain to me the role of editors vis a vis the Times columnists. Do they even see the pieces before they're published? Do the columnists even float a general topic by them before writing?

I'm a big believer in the writers having the freedom to speak on whatever subjects they wish, but if Ross Douthat came to me and said, "I'm thinking about normalizing the incel movement," I might, you know, warn him off. "Maybe talk more about the Pope this week."

I know Douthat would deny he's normalizing the incel movement, but that's why a good editor is necessary to occasionally save a writer from themselves.
