And with so few outlets to get the word out about the WHOLE ASS BOOK that you wrote, you should be able to yell about it on the internet all you want!

Aaaand since this has blown up a little, let me put my money where my mouth is and use the opportunity to plug the short story I have in

People don't buy books they don't know about. And I try to promote other authors as much as myself. I love hearing about books I would have otherwise missed.
-
I'm sorry, I can hear you over that loud ass jacket.
-
And wtf, Patrick? You don't even follow me back.
-
I am very selective.

This might be my favorite thread..

...Wait. What?? What did I miss?

There were people cranky about mostly self-published authors self promoting. To which I say phooey. They worked hard too. Ppl don’t have to follow if they don’t want to hear it.

You'd better promote your own book--even if you have that elusive "publishing contract." Publishers no longer assign publicists. Unless you're already King, Baldacci, Rowling, et. al. you need to push your own stuff if you want sales, or even just readers.
-
I don’t know who you heard that from, but the publishing companies I’ve worked for have all assigned publicists to their books...

All creatives deserve to toot their own horns without getting slammed for doing so. In a world full of unfinished things (paintings, books, songs) it's *glorious* when someone gets published, gets an art show, gets played on the radio, and so on. It inspires the rest of us.

I had no idea people were saying that it's selfish to advertise your books. It's not. Although I hate being spammed with advertisements.
-
That's the difference right there. I haven't seen many people say its selfish to advertise books, but people are shouting for interaction. Too many writers do not use Twitter to interact...just use apps to advertise books.
-
I’ve read books I’ve first heard of on here. Those authors chat on Twitter regularly, and rarely just advertise. One day I will most definitely read a novel written by someone I know on Twitter/irl who I have followed from before the book was even conceived. (Hi

A lot of the books I've bought in recent times were due to plugging on Twitter. Books I might not have stumbled across otherwise. Especially fun when I preorder based on twitter plug alone and have forgotten all about it by the time it arrives. Always such a nice surprise.
-
I love that! Getting forgotten book mail is the best.

Is it selfish for McDonald’s to advertise? Asking for some really dumb people on Twitter.
-
I guarantee my book is at least as nourishing as a Chicken McNugget!
