1. "The real value of a (CS) college education is intangible". 2. ML != code, as far as I understand. To understand the math, i think you need to know some non-trivial amount of statistics, and a university is still a good place to learn it.

1: Yes, but not its not an absolute requirement. 2. True, but those can be picked without going through university as well.

CS is more then programming. if all you got out of it was "how to code"...then you missed the point.
-
I never said that

I agree that practice is the key for 'converting any information to knowledge'. But this sends wrong signals. One can become a name-tag ML Engineer nowadays without understanding compiler, computer architecture etc. CS is need for that; of-course you can teach yourself CS too.
-
Let's say that the knowledge of compilers and comp is architecture is helpful. The only topic that we were taught in those subjects were based around a 8080/8086 microcontroller-minimal code, more theory.

A programmer is not a developer. to code/program, you can learn by yourself. A college should gain you other "non-practical" aspects that are nonetheless, by far, more important than coding skills. If you didn't get that in your CS studies, then you wasted your time and money.

First define what is your idea of "better programmer". And what is it like the ML journey u r suggesting. These things are *subjective*!
-
The thought of having a better intuition of ideas just thanks to a "CS Background" which most of the times is connected with being a "good/better" programmer than the non-CS person is what adds a mental barrier for many people. Which it shouldn't be.
