A giant study at Microsoft adds to the growing picture of the sudden shift to remote work: the problem is not with existing work & teams; it is the future of organizations. People stop creating new bonds & become more siloed. Bad for innovation & careers.

Longitudinal work by et al: remote work has created Silos. With more asynchronous collaborations and not as much synchronous as we thought. And more importantly silos might affect future health of companies if employees don’t connect with new people over time.

Our research just published suggests that, after removing the effects of the pandemic, firm-wide remote work causes a shift to async communication (not more meetings) and makes workers’ collaboration network more siloed.

New study in uses causal inference to separate the effects of remote work from COVID-19. Remote work causes: more siloed communication between workers, more time spent on IM and email, and, surprisingly, less time in meetings:

Pretty jaw dropping demo, and the paper is awesome. Worth noting -- if you've written code that ended up on GitHub OR text that ended up on the web, you're likely a contributor. IMO, that makes this even cooler, and more exciting.
