When you’re having an animated conversation with about Susan Strange at the British museum cafe and the two elderly women sitting next to you feel compelled to ask, who is the fascinating person you’re discussing. A very cool moment.

Looking forward to seeing fellow Susan Strange fan talk about the power of big tech at lunchtime on Wednesday. It’s free - come along if you fancy it!

When it comes to trade, the UK has basically turned itself into Canada, if Canada were completely deluded about its economic position in the world.

Surely this game should be played in Canada. * Largest and third largest crowds ever recorded outside Australia * Largest participation numbers in the Northern Hemisphere * A third of Australians are already in Whistler and Banff * Poutine Do we need to say any more?

I just arrived in the UK hours before it followed through on one of the dumbest self-destructive political acts in history, reading about the US Senate’s embrace of a mad king while Australia burns. So I’m definitely in a glass half-empty kind of way atm.

The key point: while everyone focuses on the relative decline of US global power, its relative power vis a vis Canada is likely to increase cuz 1. Canada is so important to US security and 2. It will have to resort to more heavy handed tactics due to its decline in soft power.

And not just this president, but future ones who will benefit from Trump’s pathbreaking evisceration of democratic accountability.

On the economic front, the US slide into authoritarianism opens Canada up to (more) capricious actions by a US president who feels unconstrained by Congress and emboldened by the undemocratic Electoral College. Especially now that NAFTA 2.0 is weaker than 1.0.

The foundation of Canadian-US deep interdependence is broadly shared values. It’s what legitimizes, say, the operation of US border security in Canadian airports. If all of a sudden you’re dealing with a country that doesn’t follow the rule of law, that’s a problem.

I really hope Canadian officials are thinking through the policy implications of sharing a border with a powerful authoritarian country. Cuz a) that’s where we’re heading; and b) it’s different from bordering a democratic one.

Martin Wolf: Will this separation endure? Nobody can know. But it is quite likely to last a long time. In my own view, it is a huge blunder. But the moment is now upon us. We must live with its consequences

Example number 652 that the key characteristic of a data-driven society isn't the tech or the commodification, but the belief that engineers and computer scientists should be treated as experts in any field of human knowledge.

When you start a you are learning how to do research. You don't know how to do it so ask questions. Lots of questions. If you already knew how to do a PhD there wouldn't be any point in doing it. You are doing it to learn.

The thing to understand about Zuboff's The Age of Surveillance Capitalism is that it's a polemic that shades into moral panic, not sound research. I unpack the many substantive problems with it in this review.
