      @jbeda @thockin @bgrant0607 - what's the origin of healthz/varz/statusz ("z" at the end?)

      Lost to the sands of time. Rumor is that someone wanted to add metric variables at "/vars" but it already existed, so "/varz" was born. Everything else cargo-culted that convention. @JeffDean may have been present for the birth of it...

      It's because "real words" like /var or /health or /status might be actually useful in "real" URLs. By adding 'z', we adopted a convention that didn't pollute the useful space and made it easy to tell if this was an internal monitoring URL.

      ~All of the fooz pages are informational. quitquitquit, huphuphup, abortabortabort, and killkillkill impact running processes. I'd guess repeating the command 3 times was to make extra sure you meant it. Or maybe the creator was frustrated :-). May also simplify access control

          quitquitquit was wide open for way too long. I remember that at some point you could just kill things if you weren't careful.

          Ssh, don't tell anyone, but for years we used to leak access to a bunch of them every time a datacenter went into maintenance and we had to bounce the DNS disobeyers through an extra level of LoadBalancer NAT. Oh wait, we finally fixed that back in ~2009 :-P
