What does crossplane use now, and what would prevent using this as is? It is available in GKE.

Crossplane GCP controllers call GCP api directly, and don't make an assumption that the controllers run in GKE exclusively. Is it safe to assume that there are no current plans to open source config connector?

Config Connector can run on any Kubernetes, not just GKE.
