I'd be a bit concerned with shipping proprietary controllers as part of the deployment model for an upstream project, but definitely interested in exploring the possibility.

Mainly I'm worried about if it would introduce any limitations on the distribution of the upstream releases or the ability for other projects (commercial or OSS) from consuming the upstream code/release.
