GitOps is the best thing since configuration as code. Git changed how we collaborate, but declarative configuration is the key to dealing with infrastructure at scale, and sets the stage for the next generation of management tools.

Or rather : GitOps is just another word for infrastructure as code.

I really think declarative config (YAML and JSON) is where the two approaches differ.

Right. Configuration as version-controlled data.

Does your configuration then mention versions or shas? Versioning and updating is something we’ve been struggling with with declarative infra along with repo sprawl. Are you going repos to asset management systems like a cmdb some way or is repo just tag on deployed artifact?

Yes, that's a pattern I've advocated in multiple situations: http://issues.k8s.io/1697 ,http://issues.k8s.io/22368
