Ten Beautiful Postcards by @thecatamites. Most underrated game of the year, a super-ambitious epic that shows how rich and affecting the 'flatgame' format can be. https://thecatamites.itch.io/10-beautiful-postcards …pic.twitter.com/ppHpCMZoPz

Noita by @PetriPurho, @ESAdevlog and @facepalmgames. My favorite game since Dark Souls, I have about 110 hours in this one. It fuses two of my favorite genres (physics games and roguelikes) taking the best elements of both. https://store.steampowered.com/app/881100/Noita/ …pic.twitter.com/COqHbw16ZQ
Elsinore by @kchironis and team. This adventure goes for Crawford's holy grail - a thoughtfully written narrative game with a convincing model of causality - and nails it. Ridiculously impressive. https://store.steampowered.com/app/512890/Elsinore/ …pic.twitter.com/WJg4jWvjqs
Song of Bloom by @kamibox_ph. Hearkens back to a time when designers were still inspired by the touchscreen - jam packed with interesting and novel ideas in visual art, interaction mechanics, puzzle design, semiotics. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/song-of-bloom/id1479162134 …pic.twitter.com/IhUDBtn96a
Death Stranding by @HIDEO_KOJIMA_EN and (large) team. The core gameplay idea is something I feel intense jealousy over... it works extremely well and is a good vehicle for Kojima's fun narrative style, which I take mostly as comedy. https://www.playstation.com/en-us/games/death-stranding-ps4/ …pic.twitter.com/BBzCZyT3Uu
Lonely Mountains: Downhill by @LonelyMnts. Another idea I wish I had come up with myself, but I mostly love this because it's perfectly crafted. Action games are great when they feel great in the hand. https://store.steampowered.com/app/711540/Lonely_Mountains_Downhill/?curator_clanid=33945063 …pic.twitter.com/CY9RlTFs6w
AI Dungeon 2 by @nickwalton00. Had some arguments with friends over whether or not this is a game, which is one of the strongest reasons to play it. It'll be seen by history as a pioneer of something transformative. https://www.aidungeon.io pic.twitter.com/zvHOZFCnoc
Disco Elysium by @studioZAUM. The best, funniest writing, and the best pairing of RPG mechanics to writing, of any game I've played. "What would it be like if the Baldur's Gate genre grew up?" https://store.steampowered.com/app/632470/Disco_Elysium/ …pic.twitter.com/tQVixCenZ3
Wilmot's Warehouse by @KommanderKlobb and @dick_hogg. Gives you more of that satisfaction-through-organization feeling than any game since Tetris. Also one of the great co-op games if you're into that. http://wilmotswarehouse.com pic.twitter.com/Me6C7bbRcM
KIDS by @any_user and @michaelfrei10. Effortlessly beautiful, breezily short, still thinking about this one months later. These two designers are so cool it's ridiculous. https://store.steampowered.com/app/793370/KIDS/ …pic.twitter.com/aSsyNP8p8R
Ok that's ten. Had to leave off a number of great things - this was a strong year, so diverse and good and exciting. It's hard to argue that we aren't in a golden era for grown-up narrative games, but other styles are also enjoying a growth spurt.
