According to Chait, it's a "media failure" to write a piece that specifically and only debunks the bioweapon theory unless you also talk about some less-crazy lab leak theories, too.

It's hard to conflate two things when you don't talk about one of them at all.

how is it worse to have been maybe an accidental escape from a lab studying actual dangerous organisms that exist in the wild vs letting rich assholes do dangerous wildlife trade for $billions for fake cures & jerk meals for decades until new viral & bacterial strains escape

There is no reason to listen to political pundits (Chait) or novelists (Nicholson Baker) or anyone but the scientists on this.

Scientists gave the media a many good arguments for why COVID is unlikely to have been a bioweapon. They're still good: All but uncontrollable but not that lethal, so useless as a weapon.

If China was doing an illegal covert bioweapons program it would be odd to run it out of the Wuhan Institute of Virology which has ongoing collaborations with labs from New York to Texas and got funding from the US government. They have actually secret labs.

And the thing is....who cares then? What exactly is supposed to be the big deal if it's an accidental breach of lab safety protocols that began spreading a naturally occurring virus?
-
I'm still not sure if "lab leak" means "virus that was created/modified in the lab" or whether it includes "naturally occurring virus that happened to be in the lab."
