If they didn't hold the J&J vaccine to assess the safety signal, the anti-vaxxers would be able to say "The authorities knew about the 6 blood clots, but they did nothing."

The anti-vaxxers aren't going to take it either way. Now people who want the J&J vaccine can't get it.

They're convening a meeting of the safety reviewers. It'll probably be back online again quickly. Maybe with some new guidelines like to not give it to women on birth control pills or something.

Because anti-vaxxers rely on disinformation their protestations have very little to do with real policy or analysis. No matter the course of action, they will attempt to spin it as some nefarious plot.

But the most dangerous bits of misinformation are the ones that are partly true. You could sell an investigative story to a reputable news outlet about how regulators knew about X risk and did nothing.

It's a no-win. IMHO, they should have had made a decision before they announced anything, honestly.

Anti-vaxxers, like every pseudoscientific / fringe movement, aim for a heads I win - tails you lose game. Of course they'd do that. But how does that compare to how they'll use the public communications effect the pause?

I think answering this is hard, but it's plausible the latter is much worse.

Think about when creationists challenge evolutionary biologists to debate. If refused, they spin it as scientists unfairly suppressing them and being afraid of confronting them. If they accept, they spin it as evidence of their legitimacy as a side in a scientific controversy.

No matter what course you take, they've got a propaganda response. But that doesn't mean one of these choices isn't better than the other. People aren't equally receptive to all propaganda. I'm never quite sure which one it is, but that one is objectively better is plausible.

I've been on the opposite side of this issue until this tweet and the subsequent one. I hadn't thought of it that way but I see the truth in what you are saying. I thought this issue was black and white, I see that it is not.
