Would you trust the home office to administer anything? It's also an application to stay; For people who've come here legally - if we're going to do this at the very least we could make it free for those who have come and contributed to our economy and country.

Sure.. But for so many brexit was predicated on immigration (mistakenly IMO). Momentarily it looked as though Europeans may get kicked out! Id rather they pay a token fee and stay if that keeps xenophobes happy. They did win afterall.
-
Xenophobes. Winning? Surely a true British value is to not pander/give in to xenophobes?

I cannot believe how frivolously you are talking about something that is so awful for so many people. Put yourself in their shoes.
-
I'm not being frivolous. A consequence of brexit was always going to be the suddenly fragile position of eu nationals here. I agree, the principle is icky. But the practically is fairly simple. It's a clusterf**k of errors. But it's no time to be easily offended by a £65 bill.
-
It's what the form and £65 bill represent...what they mean to the people having to go through it. Read some of the tweets from people who feel unwanted/unwelcome. It's utterly shameful.

The home office’s record on these issues is terrible. Many news journalists - myself included - have stopped people being deported unlawfully (in my case 3 children to a country they had no connection to). I wouldn’t trust the HO on anything like this

A lovely, talented Portuguese nurse looked after my dying father in hospital this summer. She worked her butt off and made a horrible situation much easier for my family - it makes me want to find her and offer to pay the fee for her myself.

But how will people know that, say, my French wife has paid the fee to remain in Britain legally with her husband and children ? I think she should wear a yellow star, to make her status clear.

It seems that it will affect people who have lived here for decades, which doesn’t seem fair though.

I never used to pay to have my garden waste collected. Now it’s £40 a year.
-
I don’t think that has anything to do with the EU? That’s more like your council prioritising services following the cuts since the banking crash.
-
Yes and we can’t afford to administer the process to keep the EU citizens here so they have to pay!
-
What rubbish. Equating you having to pay for your garden rubbish had bugger all to do with it. They add value to our society and economy. Maybe you’re just Xenophobic and don’t want to acknowledge that fact...?

My niece is a German National and has no problem with having extra checks in order to secure her long term residency in the U.K.

I think most EU citizens, including many Brits are feeling this country is not so awesome. Making people who have lived here for many years, contributed massively culturally and economy pay this fee is disgusting. They don’t feel welcome and we should be ashamed.
