When Gates retired in 2008, he was worth 58 billion. When he pledged to give away his wealth in 2010, he was worth 100 billion. I think we should be suspicious of anyone claiming to do charity while hoarding far more than anyone needs.

This is not money Gates or Bezos have in the bank, nor is it money that they can liquidate tomorrow. Its the combined worth of all the companies they helped fund and develop. Calculated within are all salaries that all employees earn in those companies.

It's true that net worth isn't the same as cash on hand, but it doesn't include the worth of the companies or have anything to do with employee salaries. It's simply assets, like property and investments, minus liabilities like debt.
