this is pathological. I'm not sure that any of the think-pieces I've read over the years have truly explained how this toxic entitlement & identitarian-esque attachment to technical minutiae that fuels abuse sustains itself. how do we unmake it as an industry? can we?https://twitter.com/corybarlog/status/1400666008256352261 …

For real, y’all, this is some BULLSHIT! You want to be mad at somebody for ANYTHING GOW related - the delay, ps4/5, trolls, subtitle size, Sigrun, whatevs - be angry with me. I made the calls. I did this. Don’t bother the team, they are all very good people doing great work. pic.twitter.com/D5rsvzFmgV

appreciate @corybarlog calling this out on behalf of his employee. but the solution isn't redirecting the rage - much of which is deeply misogynistic, in any case. can we delegitimise communities that thrive on this level of rage and obsession, on an industry-level?

we as industry workers pay the price for this toxic "engagement culture", where the industry values and even encourages toxic fandom, factionalism and parasociality. we've created consumers who want to consume our output but also us as well, which is deeply fucking weird.

we want consumers to care. as an industry, as a corporate culture, the problem we are focused on solving is consumers indifference. but what happens when consumers care too much? as an industry, we don't even have the language or tools to recognise it as a problem.

I do think there is something specific about the kind of abuse game developers receive, fuelled by a sense of ownership over the "games" and envy for those who make them - which manifests as worship for the "worthy", and vilification for those of us deemed "undeserving" https://twitter.com/betterthemask/status/1401916127098421250 …

It stands to reason that people who hate real people would love AAA Videogames

I do think that the online "gamer" community is a refuge for a certain sort of disaffected and unhappy person, because it is not healthy to become this upset about a delayed game or subtitle font.

A lot of the G*mergate conspiracy theories were weird, but the culture around games means there was a lot of people willing to believe them.

Yeah, I agree. I think the “for the gamers” messaging feeds into this stuff. I tried to write a bit about it a few years ago and got abuse for it, obviously. https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.vg247.com/2019/07/12/game-developers-time-stop-listening-fans/amp/ …pic.twitter.com/S87zQKptcq

It's also like.... intuitively counter to long-term success? Yeah, maybe allowing behavior like this in the short term makes you profit, but it also makes roughly half or more of the world hate being in the same community as these people.
