Have most people who spend their time online complaining about 2020 actually had a bad year? Lost a job or loved one? Most folks I see basically missed out on a vacation.

I think that's true and can be a vicious circle. BUT...the absence of almost all the things that interrupt daily tedium - a week away, the theater or concert, friends at a pub or meal out, isn't nothing either.
That’s perhaps why people are complaining so much, they have nothing else to do
