This frog has a fitting scientific name: Mini mum. In fact, a full-grown adult can fit on the back of a thumbtack! Its size ranges from a mere 0.38 in (9.7 mm) - 0.44 in (11.3 mm). 2 other tiny frogs make up the genus Mini. Their names? Mini scule & Mini ature! [📸: PLOS One]

Close up of a Mini mum frog resting atop a human's finger nail. The frog is sitting, facing the left. It has dark brown skin on its underside and light brown skin on its back side. Its eye appears black with a red ring around it.

In the 19th century, women known as "watchers" were tasked with verifying the dead. A fascinating read 👇

I started reading this man’s obit because I liked his name, but the whole thing is a delight. “He was an enthusiastic but exasperating trivia partner, whispering the answers so loud the opposing team could hear.”

Was trying to think of historical precedents for tours with holograms of dead rock stars and then remembered the Victorians loved to have seances channeling George Washington etc. Fewer stage effects, but only just.

Wait. The metal devil horns thing supposedly came from ... Italian grandmothers?

Tulane just acquired Anne Rice's archives: (it is always interesting to me who is, and isn't, considered worthy of archiving).

This is a nice rundown of some ways to not be a jerk to your friends who have chronic illness. These numbers aren't going down any time soon, so I'd consider it recommended reading.

It is always ok, of course, to ask if the person wants research help or resources. That can happen. But sometimes it's just Saturday night and we don't want this shit, ok?

Unless the sender is a medical professional, chances are good the recipient already has done enough research to know what the thing you're sending says. Unless we're talking breaking news of an actual, newly patented miracle drug, it's unlikely to be helpful.

For real though: A great way to help an ill friend is to offer practical assistance, like rides or food or company. Speaking from my own experience, a non-great thing to do is to send them an article you just read about something that you think might be wrong with them.

This is, appropriately, brought to you by the letters O, T & D. On this day in 1485, what is thought to be the first visual alphabet in a book was printed in Venice. Giacomo Publicio's "Oratoriae artis epitoma" can be found in our Dibner Library:
